Dennis Hunt

While I was at Carroll I was in the Piarist Religious Order.
After graduation I went to live during the summer. at the school the order ran outside Philadelphia. I attended intensive Spanish classes at Villanova University during that summer and then went to begin my Noviate year at the order's house on Lake Erie in upstate New York. At the end of the year I left the religious order and was accepted at the University of Texas in Austin where I majored in Portuguese and Spanish and Latin American and Iberian studies. In 1967 i studied at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil and returned in 1968 to continue work on my degree at UT Austin and was hired by the University to teach English to foreign students. In 1969 I graduated from UT and accepted a fellowship and a teaching position at the University of Lisbon in Portugal. In 1970 I accepted a position at a major university in Brazil to help them develop their English program. In 1975 I returned to the US to begin work toward a PhD in psychology. In 1978 I divorced my first wife. In the summer of 1980 I remarried and spent the summer in Brazil on a research fellowship from the Jornal do Brasil. In 1980 I did a one-year internship at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. In 1981 I returned to the Washington area where I set up a federally-funded foster care program for refugee children. I focused particularly on work with traumatized refugee children and completed my PhD dissertation on this topic in 1988. In 1992 I expanded my work with refugees to build a large mental health and social service dedicated to work with immigrants and refugees and immigrants. The Center for Multicultural Human Services (CMHS) became a model of culturally-sensitive service delivery, offering services in 33 languages and becoming a major internship training center for graduate students in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work and Art Therapy.In 1998 I divorced my second wife. In 2007 I left CMHS to accompany my fiance to Japan where she was offered a very prestigious position at a new university. In Japan I was hired by the University of Maryland to teach in their graduate counseling program offered on US military basis and I worked as a clinical supervisor for a Navy substance abuse program. In 2009 I married my current wife who is Japanese and is also a Clinical Psychologist. In 2010 I accepted a position directing a program for an international non-profit that provide support services for vulnerable children in the slums of Rio and Sao Paulo. late 2010 I was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumor and had to undergo emergency surgery. I returned to the US where I was accepted into a Clinical Trial at the Duke University Cancer Center. After a second surgery and almost 3 years of various treatments I believe I have escaped the death sentence that usually comes with a glioblastoma. I recently opened a private psychotherapy and consulting business. I have provided training and consulting on a range of mental health, non-profit and cross-cultural issues across the US, in Bosnia and Brazil.

The clearest memory I have is of Father Skelly's classes. He was very demanding and if someone appeared in class unprepared he would announce to all that he was assigning that student a zero, or, as he put it, a big fat goose egg. I still have verses from Virgil lingering in the recesses of my memory. One of my favorites was ,"Forsan, et haec, olim meminisse juvabil" For those who wer not in the class a rough translation would be Perhaps, hereafter it will be pleasant for us to remember these things" And, indeed, it is.
